Earth Science Kits for Kids

Earth science can be one of the most exciting branches of science for children to become involved in, not least because it is observable everywhere in our normal surroundings. With an earth science background every trip to the park can become a scientific adventure. All most children need is a push in the right direction and the spark for science can ignite inside their minds. Earth science is also studied heavily in school and is a mandatory class all the way up to college level so the lessons learned as a child will go a long way.
It comes as no surprise that kids love volcano kits. They are one of the most popular science projects, mostly because they explode. The Our Amazing Volcanoes kit allows children to build their very own erupting volcano, along with other activities that include a rock collection, a working geyser model and a kit for growing crystals. Over seven different volcano models are included and the kids even get to paint them. Also included is a 128 page science book that is full of facts presented in a fun and entertaining manner. This kit provides a lot of bang for very little buck, and yes that was a volcano pun.
Another extremely popular kit is Carnivorous Creations. This kit from DuneCraft allows children to actually grow their own carnivorous plants. Don't picture "Little Shop of Horrors" just yet, because these plants only eat insects. They do a great job of eating insects as well and are actually quite useful to keep inside the house to munch on flies and spiders. Over 10 varieties of carnivorous plants can be grown from this kit including the infamous Venus Fly Trap. For religious families there is also the Biblical Garden kit that allows children to grow a variety of plants mentioned specifically in The Bible.
From the Smithsonian itself comes the Bio Dome Habitat which I assure you does not involve Pauly Shore in any way. This fascinating kit lets children build four of their very own sustainable habitats. The habitats are as follows: an ant farm, a rainforest chamber for frogs or a lizard, an aquarium for fish and a bug chamber for insects. Included is a bug catcher for safely catching insects and a variety of connecting tubes to create a custom habitat with interconnecting parts. No promises, but kids may be able to keep so many pets in this habitat that they don't ask for a puppy.
For some good ol' American fun look no further than Odd Pods. Odd Pods are a series of terra cotta tubes meant for growing Cacti. Cacti are actually only native to North and South America and all of the seeds included in this kit come from Arizona and Texas. The seeds even come with a guarantee which you don't get in many "grow your own" kits. Seeds start sprouting in only five days and a care guide is included in the package. Odd Pods are also available as glow-in-the-dark Glow Pods.
All these kits are intended to get a child excited about science and to encourage questions about the world around them. More than that, all of these kits are entertaining and will hold children's interest.

Law and Social Sciences Program

The National Science Foundation, more often known as NSF, is a United States government agency that mainly supports essential research and education in all the non-medical related fields of science and engineering. The attempts of the National Science Foundation are aimed at realizing their mission, which is to "To promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense." In line with this particular mission, the NSF has constituted the Law & Social Sciences Program wherein it seeks to ask for proposals that could attend to social scientific studies of law and law-like systems of rules. The Law & Social Sciences Program will be naturally interdisciplinary and multi-methodological. The guidelines of the program necessitates that in order for a proposal to be successful, it should contain research ideas that will advance scientific theory and the perception of the linkages between human behavio...

A School Trip From Bermuda Takes a Science Tour of Orlando

Often teachers will approach me with a general idea for a trip to a certain destination. I work closely with educators to customize tours that reflect their curriculum and provide fun and interesting sites on the itinerary. Heather Stevens is school Coordinator for Overseas Educational Tours. She is a Para Educator for pre-kindergarten through fifth graders at Purvis Primary school in Bermuda. She needed guidance and ideas for an educational trip to Orlando. Stevens wanted her students to visit Walt Disney World, and engage in the study of science. Walt Disney World in Florida has some excellent science-focused educational programs in their Youth Education Series (Y.E.S.). There are some specific programs geared towards the science student: Synergy in Science (Epcot Center), Wild by Nature (Animal Kingdom), Seaworld Education Program and Physics - Energy & Waves (Magic Kingdom). Disney World exhibits are used as examples of the direct application of technology and science. Thi...
